Crested Walnut - Original Sculpture
Description
Medium: Kiln-formed glass on walnut slab
Collection: Glass Forms
Crested Walnut is a wall-mounted mixed-media sculpture from the series “A Conversation Between Glass and Wood.” The work explores the natural dialogue between the fluid movement of glass and the organic structure of wood.
The kiln-formed glass was created using a custom fiber mold that I designed by studying the growth rings and patterns of the walnut slab. Tempered glass is first cleaned, then carefully shattered and arranged in a flat pattern before being fused in the kiln. Because the image reverses and mirrors during firing, achieving the final composition often requires multiple attempts.
Once fused, the glass is slumped into the handmade mold to form the flowing crests and curves that echo the natural rhythms of the wood. The finished glass elements are then mounted to a carefully selected walnut slab that was milled, planed, cut, and sanded to its final form. The walnut was intentionally left unfinished to preserve the raw beauty and tactile character of the wood.
Crested Walnut has been exhibited in multiple national exhibitions and reflects my ongoing exploration of the expressive relationship between natural materials and sculptural form.
