Ancient Water reflects the quiet mystery of subterranean spaces where mineral formations and water have shaped the earth over centuries. Inspired by visits to the cenotes of the Mayan Riviera, Mexico, the painting captures the feeling of standing within these ancient chambers where stone, water, and time intersect.
The upper portion of the painting is carved with layered texture and washed with pale limestone tones, evoking the worn cavern walls found deep within these natural formations. Below, sepia pigments drip and gather across the surface, referencing the slow growth of mineral formations—stalactites and stalagmites shaped over thousands of years.
Through these descending forms, glimpses of deep blue water emerge, like a hidden pool partially revealed through the ancient stone. Pigment moves across the sculpted terrain, allowing edges to bloom and dissolve in ways that echo the quiet movement of water through limestone.
Ancient Water reflects the enduring presence of water beneath the earth’s surface—ancient, patient, and continually shaping the landscape over time.
