This mixed media piece started with me falling in love with this GORGEOUS cherry wood slab at the mill.  I had it planed and cut to size.  I hand-sanded and finished the wood with 3 coats of polyurethane.  It, like many other slabs, sit in my studio for years while I ponder what they want to be.  I wait for them to  "speak" to me if you will.  

The glass was created in my kiln in a custom fiber mold that I made specifically for this wood.  The glass is system 96 iridized blue glass that was cut and fired to shape then slumped into the custom mold.  The glass is created to mimic, enhance and accentuate the distinct characteristics of the wood,  Look closely at how it sits within the growth rings. The glass is floated off the surface with wood dowels and held in tension with wire cable. It's called "The Unfolding" because the glass turned in on itself, which was unplanned, but I absolutely loved it, so I went with it.  Like a flower unfolding.  The "Cherry" in the title is the wood and the "Blue" is the glass.
